What I offer

Individual Counselling

Personalised therapy sessions for individual growth and healing.

Speaking to a counsellor on your own gives you the confidential and secure space to really unravel what's troubling you. Counselling works in lots of different ways to help you find peace and find different perspectives that serve you better. This can be a powerful process when it unlocks new ways of feeling, thinking and behaving. Whether you wish to do a short piece of therapeutic work or unravel something over a longer term; counselling can be tailored to what helps. This can be done in regular sessions face to face, across telephone, webcam or email. Counselling begins with an assessment to help you understand how it can help.

Couples Counselling

Enhance communication and connection with your partner through couples counselling.

Whatever your relationship is struggling with, counselling with your partner can move you to understanding more and work toward change. You'll attend regular sessions to learn to do this in a medium that suits you. Whether that's face to face, webcam telephone or email. It doesn't matter whether your relationship is short or long, married or not, heterosexual or relationship and/or gender diverse, or culturally diverse. Attend an assessment to explore how it can help. Couple counselling does involve the opportunity to speak to your counsellor in private as part of the focus on your relationship.

Young People & Children's Counselling

Session to help young people and children to learn about themselves and grow.

Young people's counselling (ages 11-18 years) is a private and safe space to talk about anything that's causing you emotional distress. I understand everyone is unique and solely talking isn't always helpful. In regular sessions, we can work in lots of different ways to support you to feel more comfortable. You can have as many or as few sessions as you like and you're in charge of what we explore. Parents aren't invited to lead your therapeutic work.

Children's counselling (ages 6-10 years) is an option parents may wish to consider when they want to give their little ones an opportunity to express themselves about something in their lives that's troubling them. In regular sessions I work creatively and in play with children and they lead their own way. Parents may attend the assessment session alone or join with their child.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is described as a talking therapy. Its works by honesty exploring your feelings, thoughts and behaviours to help you find other perspectives. It is these other perspectives that lead to your solutions, different outlooks and peace of mind. I believe counselling is about finding a professional who is able and willing to sit with whatever difficulties you're facing whether an individual, couple, parent, young person or child. To not judge you and to provide a comfortable and secure space to carefully unravel difficult and painful emotions. To support you in finding meaning with those difficulties, making changes to feel better and to improve yourself and your relationships. To offer ideas that might help but to not tell you what to do. This is what I'm able to offer using a range of approaches to suit your needs and preferred way of working.

I've been helping adult individuals, couples, parents and young people in counselling for 16 years. I specialise in working with relationships, whether thats with other people, or the relationship you have with yourself. The space I provide is confidential and safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long are the counselling sessions?

Counselling sessions typically last up to 50 minutes.

Session may finish earlier with children and young people for example, if the length of time becomes overwhelming.

Can you see me on my own for counselling as well as with my partner in couples counselling?

Generally speaking most therapist wouldn't recommend two pieces of counselling at the same time. This is so that counselling doesnt become overwhelming or conflicting.

It can be common for a couples therapist to see you for a few individual sessions during couples counselling. However, this will be still working with the aims for your relationship.

As a parent; can you see me, me and my partner, and me and my child, to help us all?

I'm not trained to work with three or more people in the room. This would be the skills of a family counsellor, which I'm not trained to do. You can search for a local family counsellor at Counselling Directory - Find a Counsellor Near You or Psychology Today United Kingdom: Health, Help, Happiness + Find a Therapist

I can work with your child or young person on their agenda, yourself alone with your own agenda, or you and your partner with your relationship's agenda.

In childrens counselling it is common for the parents alone to attend the first assessment session. With young children sometimes they prefer a parent to be present in the room until they feel comfortable.

In young peoples counselling, many young people prefe their parent to attend the assessment for the first 10 minutes. However this isn't mandatory.

"Having never had counseling before I was apprehensive, however Sam instantly made me feel at ease. I felt more and more comfortable with Sam, which enabled me to open up and explore deeper issues."
